The event is in its eighth consecutive year and is lead by the Department of International Studies and supported by the Faculty of Arts. A packed house of students, staff and community members watched the film El Acompañante (The Companion).

Along with the film screening and lively panel discussion, the event included live music, dance performances and food. If you missed out on the event this year, make sure you keep your eyes out for the festival in 2017.

At an exclusive event held at the Australian National Maritime Museum in October, two of our researchers launched their new book Mistress of Science: The Story of the Remarkable Janet Taylor. The book details the life of Janet Taylor, a gifted mathematician, astronomer, author, instrument maker, teacher and mother.

It was the result of more than five years of intensive research from Professor John Croucher AM, who has already authored 30 books and holds four PhDs, and Professor Rosalind Croucher AM, who was the Australian Woman Lawyer of the Year in 2014. Guests at the well-attended event included two Rear Admirals and former Macquarie Vice-Chancellor Professor Steven Schwartz, along with an array of other high-profile attendees.

Interdisciplinary roundtable: ‘Markers of authenticity across the disciplines’

On Friday 4 November, a roundtable forum was held in the Museum of Ancient Cultures entitled ‘Markers of authenticity across the disciplines’. It was the final event in an interdisciplinary seminar series that was convened by Associate Professor Malcolm Choat, Dr Rachel Yuen-Collingridge and Lauren Dundler from the Department of Ancient History and sponsored by the Ancient Cultures Research Centre and the Faculty of Arts.

The forum featured participants from the Departments of Ancient History, English, International Studies, and Media, Music, Communication and Cultural Studies, as well as from UNSW and the Art Gallery of NSW. Next year, the series will feature work from an ARC Discovery Project on ‘Forging antiquity: Authenticity, forgery, and fake papyri’, recently awarded to a team led by Choat. It will also reach beyond the Faculty of Arts to examine issues of authenticity addressed by researchers in other faculties to build interdisciplinary momentum around the theme.
