MGSM’s big win

We’re used to battling them in the rankings tables, but there was a different sort of battle happening against Sydney University last week, with the MGSM-sponsored Northern Suburbs Rugby Club claiming victory over them in Shute Shield, New South Wales’ premier grade rugby trophy.

With Sydney University having dominated the competition for much of the last decade, and the hashtag #anyonebutuni doing the rounds on Twitter, the crowd was thrilled to see Norths break a 41-year premiership drought to claim the Shield.

Macquarie University web producer and rugby fan Margaret Chidgey watched the final with her family and says it was an ‘awesome’ game.

“It was the way that rugby should be. The captains on both sides were incredibly sportsmanlike. After the final siren, all the supporters flooded onto the field to celebrate — Norths couldn’t even take their conversion kick.”

Macquarie is also the sponsor of the National Rugby Championship team the Sydney Rays, who kick off their 2016 campaign against local rivals the Western Sydney Rams on 28 August at North Sydney Oval.
