Our University, Our Future – Have your say

Over the course of February and March a series of University-wide events will be held by Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton for Macquarie’s staff and students to engage in the development of a University Operating Plan for 2020-2024.

In late 2019 the Executive Group agreed the need for a more detailed Operating Plan to focus attention and accelerate performance in what is an increasingly challenging operating environment for the University.

To complement the engagement events, and to ensure that as many staff as possible can constructively contribute to the discussion, a digital engagement platform will be launched on 11 February. The site will seek input on key areas of focus for the University and staff will be encouraged to submit ideas, provide feedback and join the discussion.

“I welcome the insights of the Macquarie community on necessary next steps in order to deliver a transformative, research-enriched learning experience for our students in the resource-constrained environment we are facing,” says Professor Dowton.

“This process will ensure that we harness the University’s collective knowledge and prioritise our actions to meet our potential and future aspirations.”

The consultation will shape the development of the new Operating Plan, which will inform the University’s budget review for 2020 and the budget, investment, resources, activities and plans for all Faculties and Offices for 2021-2024.

Dates of engagement workshops and a link to the digital engagement platform for staff will be released following the launch on 11 February.  Student engagement in the process will be informed by face-to-face workshops, engagement with the Student Representative Council (SRC) and student feedback that has been captured through a range of surveys and channels.

  1. Dear Vice-Chancellor and members of Macquarie University Community,

The tragic events of the last two months—the destruction of our vulnerable legacy of precious wildlife and forests— have but confirmed my worst fears about most politicians in this country. Yet, lack of leadership and concrete plans to tackle climate change from our Prime Minister should not make us feel disempowered. As the University moves to develop a new Operating Plan what are concrete steps are being taken to address Climate Change? Do we have plans to be part of the solution, not the problem? My suggestions:
    1. A Macquarie University wide declaration of “Climate Emergency Declaration”
    2. A Macquarie University adaptation program to net-zero carbon emissions commitment by 2030 (following on the lead of Monash University; Monash Net Zero iniciative; https://www.monash.edu/net-zero-initiative ).
    3. A Macquarie University wide declaration to target investment in existing renovations or new constructions with net-zero emission sustainable buildings and to divest from and urgently phase out the use of coal, oil and gas.

    Many thanks!
