Every month we celebrate some of the impressive achievements in the Macquarie community. Got something to share for next month? Tell us.

Dr Munjed Al Muderis, orthopaedic surgeon and clinical lecturer  in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, was named the NSW Australian of the Year at a ceremony in Sydney last night.  He will attend the national awards in Canberra on Australia Day.

Dr Al Muderis, who fled Iraq in 1999, is known for his remarkable surgical work with amputees and in particular, his success using a revolutionary technique called osseointegration.

Macquarie University has been named ‘Organisation of the Year’ in the Macquarie Park category of Transport for NSW’s 2019 Travel Choices Awards. The Awards recognise organisations that have positively contributed to travel behaviour in Sydney.

Macquarie was recognised for its efforts to support and inform staff, students and visitors during the eight-month closure of the University’s train station. The Station Closure Project team – sponsored by Nicole Gower, Vice President of People and Services, and Mark Broomfield, Head of Property – oversaw a range of initiatives including timetable changes, flexible work arrangements and after-hours student activities, to address anticipated disruption without adding to traffic congestion in the local area.

Macquarie University’s H:EAR research centre has been accepted as a member of the World Health Organisation’s World Hearing Forum.

Professor Catherine McMahon will be attending the first Membership Assembly in December at the WHO headquarters in Geneva. Professor McMahon is also an invited commissioner for the Lancet Commission on Global Hearing Loss, and recently attended the first meeting of the commission in the USA.
