Macquarie hosts round table discussion with US Ambassador (main image)

Late last month Professor Ben Schreer, Acting Dean of the School of Law and Head of the Department of Security Studies and Criminology, hosted an economic round table discussion with the acting US Ambassador to Australia James Carouso. A select group of Macquarie international students from the Indo-Pacific region joined the discussion, along with staff from Macquarie International.


Hack Mac puts cyber security on the agenda

Led by Information Security Manager Jeremy Koster (pictured, in black cap), Macquarie IT hosted undergraduate students in The Incubator last Friday for the University’s annual ‘Hack Mac’ event, in partnership with the Optus Macquarie Cyber Security Hub. Students competed in a variety of hacking challenges within controlled environments, to facilitate awareness and knowledge sharing around cyber security issues.


Stargazers turn their eye to Macquarie

Some of Australia’s best science minds gathered on campus last Friday to talk stargazing  at the official launch of Australian Astronomical Optics at Macquarie University (AAO-Macquarie) – the new department within the Faculty of Science and Engineering incorporating the research and optical instrumentation capabilities formerly housed within the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.

VIP guests included New South Wales Chief Scientist and Engineer Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, with Executive Dean of Science and Engineering Professor Barbara Messerle and Interim Director of AAO Professor Michael Steel also speaking at the event.

Macquarie’s Dr Munjed Al Muderis among ‘game changers’ honoured by Bill Clinton in New York

Orthopaedic surgeon and Macquarie University clinical lecturer Dr Munjed Al Muderis was an esteemed awardee at the 2018 Asia Society Game Changers Awards in New York last week, which was attended by former US President Bill Clinton.

Dr Al Muderis, who fled Iraq in 1999, was recognised “for courage that led to his freedom, and then ground-breaking work to give patients new hope”.


Macquarie and Cochlear Ltd team up to teach Chinese practitioners

Macquarie recently hosted ENT surgeons, audiologists and clinicians from 18 hospitals in China, to participate in an Advanced Cochlear Implant Audiology and Surgical Course.

Organised in partnership with Cochlear Limited, the four-day program saw academic experts from Macquarie contribute to the program and impart their expertise to the eager Chinese participants.


Macquarie Law’s Zara Bending launches #4EverWild in London

Zara Bending records her video pledge at the Illegal Wildlife Trade London Conference 2018

Macquarie Law School’s Zara Bending was in London earlier this month for a major international conference on illegal wildlife trade. Whilst at the conference Zara – who is on the board of the Jane Goodall Institute Australia – launched Forever Wild (#4EverWild), a global campaign to combat wildlife trafficking, on behalf of Dr Goodall.
