Pets, planets and power lasers: Macquarie on show at the Sydney Science Festival

The Sydney Science Festival – part of the broader National Science Week – is all about showcasing Sydney’s diverse and multidisciplinary science and innovation community.  It’s no surprise then that Macquarie staff feature throughout the Festival program, with the University’s experts helping bring science to life for Sydney’s young and old.

Whether you’re looking to expand your knowledge, want to support your Macquarie colleagues, or you’re just after a fun day out with the family, here is a round-up of some of the fantastic events you can attend.

On campus

Women in Physics lecture: The Most Powerful Lasers in the World

Wednesday 8 August, 6.30pm
Hear from Dr Ceri Brenner – a UK physicist using the most powerful lasers in the world to develop innovative imaging technology for medical, nuclear and aerospace inspection.

The Science of Pets: How Humans and Animals Live Together
Powerhouse Museum
Saturday 18 August, 2pm – 4.30pm
An afternoon all about our animal companions – pets and wildlife. Why we love them, why they love us, how we can make their lives better, how they make our lives better.

Osmic Resonances and Sensory Correspondences
Pyrmont
Thursday 9 August, 6pm – 8pm
Experience an audio-olfactory installation harnessing synergies between sound and aromas and hear from Macquarie’s Anina Rich who explains the neuroscience behind multi-sensory perception and synaesthesia.

Night of Illusions

Saturday 11 August, 7pm – 10pm
Baffle your senses with an evening of tactile and visual illusions built to deceive your brain. Macquarie’s Dr Matthew Bulbert, Dr Regine Zopf and Dr Vince Polito join other leading scientists in exploring perception and deception.

Living Laboratory at the Royal Botanic Garden
Sydney Botanical Gardens
Saturday 11 August – Monday 13 August, 10am – 2pm
Visit hands-on science adventure stations throughout the Gardens. Meet scientists, botanical illustrators and horticulturalists and find out about the amazing work they do.

The Indigenous Science Experience Family Fun Day
Redfern Community Centre
Sunday 19 August, 10am – 3pm
Yarn with Aboriginal Elders on bush foods and medicines, make Aboriginal tools and jewellery, take part in hands-on science shows led by Indigenous youth, solve maths puzzles, try out 3D printing plus enjoy many other science and technology activities.

Brilliant Brains: How Kids Learn Language
Powerhouse Museum
Sunday 12 August, 11am – 3pm
Language scientists from Macquarie’s Child Language Lab help explain the puzzles of language learning, with interactive demonstrations and games for children of all ages.
