Congratulations to Dr Alexandra Carthey, conservation ecologist and lecturer in natural sciences, who was announced as the winner of the 2023 Taronga Conservation Society Australia’s HATCH Accelerator Program last month.

The $50,000 prize was awarded for her pop-up ‘habitat pods’ – clever cardboard shelters to hide ground-dwelling wildlife from predators after bushfires. Dr Carthey also won the $5000 People’s Choice prize. Both grants will fund more than 7000 pods to be produced in time for the coming bushfire season. Dr Carthey spoke to multiple media outlets about her win, including the Sydney Morning Herald.
