Kevin arrived at Macquarie in 2016, working on Program Beacon and as a Research Officer in the Macquarie Business School before taking on his current role as an Intellectual Property Portfolio Officer in the Office of Commercialisation and Innovation (OCI).

1. Something you feel proud of
The sense of being a piece of the puzzle that contributes to societal change and impact from innovations that our staff develop through the support and guidance that OCI provides to the University community.

Positive social change, every little bit counts.

3. Something people usually ask you when they find out what you do for living
What does a technology transfer office do? A: Macquarie’s OCI team plays an active role in assisting Macquarie creators to identify, protect and promote the societal impact of their research. Support includes provision of educational programs, evaluation, due diligence, establishing a comprehensive IP and commercialisation strategy, promotion, and negotiation of commercialisation agreements. 

4. Something you’d like staff to know about
Commercialisation is one pathway linking the discovery of novel innovations to eventual societal implementation. This process begins with research and discovery followed by notification, evaluation, and protection of intellectual property, if required. Commercialisation pathway options include licensing, spin-outs and joint ventures with industry. Commercialisation revenue of these innovations is invested back into the University for further research and development.

A positive and trusting culture underpinned by a supportive team.

6. Something you’ve read recently that has had an impact on you
Chris Hadfield’s autobiography, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth. A philosophy he learned at NASA –prepare for the worst and enjoy every moment of it – has never been more important in current times. Despite the incredible challenges we are facing, it is a good reminder to live in the moment and to make the most of now.

7. A website or app you can’t live without
Spotify is my most used app. I love discovering hidden gems throughout the day or on my drive to and from work as it shuffles through my long eclectic list of songs.

8. A personal quality you value in others
Respect, whilst we are taught about the value of treating others the way we want to be treated, it is also important to remember the value of self-respect. Having respect for oneself lends itself to respecting others.

9. A favourite photo from your camera roll
This photo was taken several years ago, it was at the end of my week-long 400km cycle through Nepal that helped raise more than $25,000 towards the funding of programs for a children’s foundation supporting orphans and disadvantaged families. This experience puts life into perspective.

10. I’m happiest when…
I am a bit of a self-confessed foodie so I appreciate exploring different tastes and textures through home cooking or eating out on my local and regional adventures.
