Foreign Relations Act: Update and move to business-as-usual processes

The transitional period for Australia’s Foreign Relations Act ended on 10 June 2021. The University would like to thank all Macquarie staff for their assistance and support throughout this period of transition.

Macquarie University is now complying with the Act through business-as-usual processes. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade should be notified of foreign arrangements both when they are proposed and when they are agreed.

If you are unsure about whether this relates to your work, refer to the  Frequently Asked Questions resource, which will be updated regularly.

Formal foreign arrangements continue to be managed through central offices and central systems. This includes arrangements handled by Macquarie International, Research Services and Higher Degree Research.

Informal foreign arrangements continue to be managed on a disclosure basis, and an online form has been created for this purpose. An online guide to the form is also available.

Importantly, business-as-usual compliance processes only apply to newly proposed and newly agreed foreign arrangements.

If you have any questions about whether your activities fall under the scope of the Act, online consultations are available. These consultations can be arranged with individuals or research areas.

Email foreign.relations@mq.edu.au if you would like to arrange a consultation or if you have any questions not covered in the FAQs.
