‘Sharks have an image problem’, says FameLab people’s favourite

Congratulations to Department of Biological Sciences PhD student Julianna Kadar, who was named the Audience Choice winner in the FameLab NSW Semi-Final event in April.

The Boston native – who has completed both a Master of Biodiversity of Conservation and Master of Research at Macquarie – provided an entertaining insight into her research with her presentation ‘Sharks can wear fitbits too’.

You can read more about Juliana’s research in The Lighthouse.

ARC Linkage Grant for Emeritus Professor Jim Piper

A team led by Emeritus Professor Jim Piper of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale BioPhotonics has been awarded an ARC Linkage Grant of $445,783 for a project that promises to revolutionise secure labelling technology.

With two of Macquarie’s Co-Chief Investigators, Dr Yiqing Lu and Dr Xianlin Zheng, and partner company MOS Technologies Pty Ltd, the team will develop new security links with unique features and capabilities.

The project – ‘Advanced lanthanide-doped nanomaterials for new-generation security links’ – involves creating a security ink that can be applied to metal, glass, plastic, paper, and potentially other surfaces, making these materials impossible to counterfeit.

The three-year project is a reunion for some: partner company MOS Technologies was founded by Macquarie postgraduates.
