Wear it Purple Day: Friday 30 August

Wear it Purple (WIP) is a great opportunity for us all to dress in something purple to show our solidarity and support alongside the LGBTQIA+ young people who are a part of our University student and staff communities at Macquarie.

Campus Life will have our frontline staff at the Sport and Aquatic Centre and in our Food and Beverage outlets proudly wearing official WIP T Shirts, with purple balloons and the Wear it Purple posters visible to show our support and raise awareness.

We are also giving away a number of specially made cupcakes decorated with the WIP logo with any coffee purchased*, at the following locations:

Staff Café
Wally’s Coffee Cart
Library Café
Piccolo Lane

The Macquarie Queer Collective will be running a $2 fundraising BBQ outside 18 Wally’s Walk (MUSE Building) the day before from 10:00am on Thursday 29 August 2019. Please consider taking a couple of minutes out of your day to come and say hello, grab a bit of food, and chat to the awesome crew of students who will be around.

*(limited – first 25 to 50 coffee’s sold per outlet)

  1. I am in full support of LGBTQIA+ awareness and support and think it is unacceptable that there is still discrimination against this community, however using balloons for an occasion like this is as outdated as homophobia. There is more than enough evidence of the negative impacts that balloons and the subsequent rubbish have on the environment such as choking turtles, tangling up birds etc etc. Just another example of MQs failed efforts at being a sustainable or environmentally conscious university.

  2. Balloons? Really? Can we not try keep plastic pollutants to a minimum? We are meant to be an environmentally conscious campus.

  3. I am very proud that at MQ we are committed to a supportive and inclusive environment for all LGBTQI+ people, many of whom shockingly STILL experience bullying and harassment. Wear It Purple day was established in the wake of LGBTQI+ teenagers taking their own lives following bullying and harassment. As a community we must stay the course on delivering and role modelling a safe and respectful culture.

    1. “Wear it Purple was founded in 2010… several rainbow young people took their own lives following bullying and harassment resulting from the lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity.” https://www.wearitpurple.org/our-story
Yes, we do still need to focus on this.
