 Welcoming our ‘Bush university’ graduates

(Main image): 13 Indigenous students from Ngukurr, Arnhem Land, have embarked on a transformative journey, commencing their studies at Macquarie this week after graduating from the University’s ‘Bush university’ trial in remote NT last year.

Before coming to Sydney, most of the students had never left their home. Many of the students plan to return to their communities after graduation to inspire younger generations to pursue higher education. We wish them all the very best for their time at Macquarie.

Viva la Venture!

Innovation was the talk of the town last Thursday, as the doors were officially opened at Venture Café Sydney. Macquarie University is operating the international network’s very first Australian location at 58 Waterloo Road, further cementing Macquarie Park as a hub of innovation in Australia.

Guests at the opening enjoyed a taste of one of the Venture Café’s core programs – the Thursday Gathering – which will see innovators from all over Sydney come together each week to connect and learn together in an informal and inspiring space.

Macquarie staff are encouraged to drop in and see what it’s all about. The Thursday Gathering happens every week from 3-8pm at 58 Waterloo Road (refreshments are provided and a regular staff shuttle to Waterloo Road departs from the Library).

From drab to fab: Human Sciences Student Centre opens

It was farewell to the old metal roller door that used to adorn the student service counter, as the Faculty of Human Science officially opened their new sparkling Student Centre earlier this month.

Cutting a ribbon on the Centre’s new QFlow touchscreen system, Executive Dean Professor Simon Handley said that the ‘one stop shop’ space was a great reflection of the Faculty’s ‘Students First’ strategy.

“We’ve created this welcoming and useful space as part of our strategy to continually improve our service to students. It’s great that all our student-facing services are now here together – Student Services, Education Professional Experience and PACE.”

Professor Handley thanked staff for working through the disruption of renovation, with special acknowledgement to project manager Louise Goddard, and Pamela Coutts, the Faculty’s recently retired long-serving Associate Dean Quality and Standards, for bringing the new Centre to fruition.

The showcase was coordinated by the Macquarie Aging and Aged Care Researchers Network, who are focused on building meaningful partnerships that connects ageing and aged care research with service providers and policy makers.  For more information on the Network, contact Denise Jepsen or Charlotte Doud.
