University introduces iPrint to help with sustainability

The University has committed to adhere to the principles of sustainability in all that we do.

While this is a big statement, the reality of achieving this at the individual level can be daunting for some. So, we try to make being sustainable as easy as possible. What helps you, helps the University, and the world.

One of the ways we’re using infrastructure and systems change to achieve sustainable outcomes is by introducing the Follow Me Printing concept (iPrint). This is nothing new – many universities and businesses have been using it for a while. And now it’s our turn to join the Follow Me Printing revolution. There are three key benefits to bringing this to the University:

  • It’s simple! No, really, it is! You can release your print job from anywhere and it will be sent to the nominated multi-function device (MFD). Then, all you need do is swipe your card, or to log into the MFD where an ID card is not present, and your documents will print.
  • It’s secure. Printing won’t go ahead until you are at the printer and have authorised the print to occur. This makes sure your documents are only seen by you, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Best of all, it’s sustainable. Last year the University purchased 31,925 reams of paper (or 15,962,500 sheets of paper – imagine the resources used to produce that, not to mention the 67 tonnes of CO2 created). According to research conducted by Lexmark, an average of 17 per cent of printed pages are considered not needed – mainly via accidental or unclaimed print jobs. For 2017, that would equal 5,427 reams of paper (or 2,713,500 sheets of paper)! By using Follow Me Printing, we’re reducing unnecessary and unclaimed printing, we’re reducing wastage and unnecessary resources use, and we’re reducing our carbon footprint.

iPrint has already been introduced for students. Central IT and Faculty IT are rolling out iPrint for staff incrementally between now and the end of the year. The process involves the installation of card readers and new software on MFDs and a driver on staff PCs and laptops. You will still print in the same way as you do today, and MFDs will still scan and copy, the only change is that documents will not print until released.
