Greek café culture of yesteryear

Currently exhibiting at the Macquarie University Library is Café Dreaming: Greek Café & Milk Bar Style, an intricate look at rare Greek café and milk bar tableware, décor, equipment and uniforms, spanning the 1920s through to the 1960s.

Curated by Leonard Janiszewski, Effy Alexakis and assisted by Rosanna Luca, the exhibition is from the ‘In Their Own Image: Greek Australians’ project in partnership with the Australian History Museum, Macquarie University.

Supporting photographic images, menus and advertising graphics, together with explanatory texts are provided.

The display highlights how stylistic unity in design initially demonstrated British tastes, but by the 1930s, American style, particularly through Art Deco design, had begun to dominate Australia’s Greek cafés and milk bars.

The exhibition comes on the back of Leonard and Effy’s book launch for Greek Cafes & Milk Bars of Australia, which chronicles how these family-based food-catering enterprises set the agenda and broadly affected and influenced Australian popular culture.
