Reward and recognition: Macquarie staff shine

Congratulations to…

Professor Martina Möllering, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts

In recognition of her contribution to Hellenic Studies, Martina has been awarded with the Ayios Kosmos o Aitolos Award by the Australian Hellenic Educators’ Association.

The award was presented on Friday 9 February, the International Greek Language Day, at Parliament House by the Consul-General of Greece, His Excellency Mr Christos Karras. It recognises Martina’s decades of support for Hellenic Studies – the scholarship and teaching of the Ancient and Modern Greek language, culture and history.

“It is an honour to be presented with this award. I have always been passionate about languages and the broad range of benefits that learning a second language has for the individual and for society on the whole,” she says.

Dr Meaghan McEvoy, Department of Ancient History

Congratulations to Meaghan who was appointed in February as a fellow of the UK’s highly prestigious Royal Historical Society.

Meaghan, a lecturer in Byzantine studies, was recognised for the impact of her research on late Roman emperors, including Honorius, who came to the throne aged 10.

It’s widely acknowledged that her book – Child Emperor Rule in the late Roman west – has advanced knowledge in a field of study she says has been largely ‘neglected’ by scholars.

“It’s always scary putting your research out there because you know not everyone will agree with you so I was very excited to get the fellowship as it is not only a mark of approval but an acknowledgment that the work is being appreciated and used by other academics in the field.”

Dr Lea Beness, Department of Ancient History

Lea has been elected to the role of Vice President of the Australasian Society for Classical Studies – an outstanding achievement and certainly a reflection of the great respect and esteem in which she is held by her Australasian colleagues.

This appointment is only the second time a female Vice President has been elected, and so far, the only appointment from Macquarie in over 50 years of the Association’s history.

Dr Rae-Anne Hardie, Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, AIHI

Rae-Anne has been named a finalist in the Bupa Health Foundation Emerging Health Researcher Awards.

Over half of Australians live with at least one chronic condition, and together they are the leading cause of ill health and death. What if we could use pathology-based screening to detect chronic disease risk factors? This would allow us to identify and treat diseases early on, and improve outcomes for patients.

Rae-Anne has been researching and looking at the quality use of pathology and laboratory testing in general practice. It’s one of the first projects in Australia to be able to use general practice to look at this type of testing in the context of chronic diseases prevention and detection.

Luke Thompson and Hew Sutherland, English Language Centre (ELC)

Luke and Hew have both been accepted into the national English Australia Action Research in ELICOS Program 2018. Acceptance into the program is highly competitive with only six proposals accepted nationally.

With the support of Cambridge English and English Australia, Luke and Hew will work closely with Professor Anne Burns, a world expert in the field of action research on their project in the theme: language learning beyond the classroom.
