It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Emeritus Professor Bruce Mansfield AM, who died peacefully at his home on Saturday 9 September; he was 91.
Professor Mansfield was a pioneering leader at Macquarie University where from 1965 he occupied the first History chair in the Professoriate and later served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
One of Professor Mansfield’s many contributions to the University was his co-authorship of Liberality of Opportunity, a historical account of the first 25 years of Macquarie University’s history.
Macquarie will celebrate Professor Mansfield’s contribution to the University at a campus memorial service in October. Further details of the event will be communicated in coming weeks through This Week.
I was in Prof Mansfield’s very first history course in 1967 — such elegant lectures– and amazingly had him as tutor in a group of four or five (those were the days!). An inspiration then and since for fair-minded judicious scholarship without self-aggrandisement or rancour. A man without guile, brimming with intelligence and kindness to all. Requiescat in pace
