Vale Emeritus Professor Bruce Mansfield AM

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Emeritus Professor Bruce Mansfield AM, who died peacefully at his home on Saturday 9 September; he was 91.

Professor Mansfield was a pioneering leader at Macquarie University where from 1965 he occupied the first History chair in the Professoriate and later served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

One of Professor Mansfield’s many contributions to the University was his co-authorship of Liberality of Opportunity, a historical account of the first 25 years of Macquarie University’s history.

Macquarie will celebrate Professor Mansfield’s contribution to the University at a campus memorial service in October. Further details of the event will be communicated in coming weeks through This Week.

  1. I was in Prof Mansfield’s very first history course in 1967 — such elegant lectures– and amazingly had him as tutor in a group of four or five (those were the days!). An inspiration then and since for fair-minded judicious scholarship without self-aggrandisement or rancour. A man without guile, brimming with intelligence and kindness to all. Requiescat in pace
