60 seconds with… Phil Dartnell

You know him as the man behind the PayDay Reminder emails, but there is a lot more to Phil Dartnell. He took some time out from his role to share a few things about himself.

I’ve been at Macquarie for…
18 years.

In a nutshell, my job is to…
Support a range of HR systems that focus on payroll, timesheets, recruitment and performance.

The question I hear most often in my work is…
How do I reverse my leave booking?

If I could do any other job at Macquarie it would be…
Researcher in Geography (my favourite subject!)

Name a Macquarie staff member that impressed you recently…Two staff members – Jenny Bremner and Martin Brooks, who are the University Business Process Improvement Managers.  They ran an excellent Rapid Improvement Event last week in improving the casual academic recruitment process.  They managed our group of eight staff members so well and made the week both constructive and enjoyable.

My ethnic heritage is…
A mixture of English, Irish and German, although I’m seventh generation Australian so virtually all my relatives live here except one cousin that lives with his family in Paris.  I am a direct descendent of an explorer called George Evans who surveyed the Bathurst area and named the Macquarie River after Lachlan Macquarie.

Outside work, you’ll often find me…
Visiting National Parks – bushwalking and photographing the beautiful scenery.  I just visited Wattamolla in the Royal National Park last weekend and also walked along the coast.

I’m really looking forward to…
The Federal Election – not for the politicians, but for managing a polling place which I’ve been doing for the last 14 years of Federal, State and Local elections.  It’s a very long day but it’s an interesting experience and I get to meet some great people.

The most amazing place I’ve ever visited is…
The Road to Hana in Maui with my wife.  It is a 100 km drive with 600 curves and 60 one-way bridges with spectacular scenery of waterfalls, cliffs, lava tubes and black and red sand beaches.

The last great movie I saw was…
Rat Race with John Cleese, Whoopi Goldberg and Rowan Atkinson – it’s my favourite movie.  I can’t stop laughing every time I watch it.

  1. It’s an incredible privilege knowing Phil; two of the most important reasons – he is a man of great integrity, and he is a great fan of Fawlty Towers.

  2. Hi Phil. As for Managing a Polling Pace and being excited about it. OMG, that’s not normal! I managed a Polling Place and the last election and vowed never to do it again.!! good luck.

  3. So nice to know more about you Phil :). You are always so helpful and knowledgeable. Thanks for supporting us DAs so well.

  4. Phil — arguably the most popular person campus! Someone should start making “MQ <3 Phil Dartnell" t-shirts.

  5. Dear Phil, we have lunch out at Macquarie Centre every pay day (since 2014 – usually at PapaRich) and have affectionately dubbed it “Phil Dartnell Day”. We look forward to celebrating many many more Phil Dartnell Days in the future. Thank you!

  6. We’d love to see you doing research in Geography Phil! Come along to our Geography & Planning research seminars any time you like 🙂

  7. It’s great to know about Phill, whose email I eagerly await fortnightly. I will now associate a range of fun things with Phill Dartnell when I see that payday reminder email! 🙂
