Macquarie features in latest fellowship round

Three Macquarie academics have been included in the latest round of ARC Future Fellowships for research in cognitive science, ancient history and biological sciences.

The recipients are:

• Dr Alexandra Woolgar
• Associate Professor Darrell J. Kemp
• Dr Karin Sowada

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Sakkie Pretorius says the researchers will receive more than $2.3 million towards their work.

“Given the fierce competition for ARC fellowships, this is a great achievement,” Professor Pretorius says.

“Macquarie is very proud that three of our candidates competed successfully in the current round.”

Macquarie researchers have received more than $1.4 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Citizen Science Grants and Australian Research Council’s Linkage Projects scheme.

Successful applicants are:

• Professor Mark Taylor and Professor Vladimir Strezov from the Department of Environmental Sciences; Dr Heather Handley from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences; and Professor Michael Gillings from the Department of Biological Sciences for their “Dustsafe” project
• Associate Professor Michelle Power and Professor Michael Gillings from the Department of Biological Sciences for their “Scoop a poop” project being conducted in collaboration with Taronga Zoo
• Dr Emilie Ens from the Department of Environmental Sciences for her project assessing cross-cultural biodiversity in remote Aboriginal Australia
• Associate Professor Barbara Griffin from the Department of Psychology and her co-investigators from Psychology, Cognitive Science and Computer Science for their project designed to improve the timely identification of swimmers at risk of drowning.
