Last week, two new ‘Tap It’ water stations were installed on campus, providing free filtered tap water to staff and students.

‘Tap it’, an initiative developed by Macquarie’s Sustainability department, aims to increase the awareness of the environmental, social, health and economic issues surrounding the purchase and use of plastic water bottles. Every year Australians are spending more than $500 million on bottled water, generating more than 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and billions of plastic water bottles in our waterways and in landfill.

The stations have an activated carbon filter that ensures the water is clean and tastes good, removing a need to purchase water bottles.

The two new fountains are located outside Macquarie Theatre and the Sports and Aquatic Centre. The four existing locations are on University Ave, outside E4A/E4B on Eastern Road, and outside E3A.
