How and why fish use rocks as tools

Researchers from the Macquarie University Fish Lab are seeking citizen scientists to help understand how and why fish use rocks as tools to open hard-shelled prey.

Some fish have been observed holding a prey item in their mouths and striking it on a hard surface quickly and repeatedly until it cracks. The researchers would like to determine which species are able to do this, where and how.

By studying tool use in fish, they hope to unravel the factors driving tool use evolution and explain why tool use is a rare behaviour in the animal kingdom.
