Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton welcomes Josephine Newland and father (and Macquarie alumnus) Paul to Open Day. Paul’s father, Dr Ron Newland, had worked with Professor Dowton when he was a student and an intern at Concord Hospital.

The once-a-year weather forecast nerves were quickly forgotten when the Macquarie community woke up to a dazzling blue-sky day for the University’s annual Open Day on 12 August.

Open Day 2023 at a glance

  • 69 information sessions across 16 lecture theatres
  • 92 campus and faculty tours
  • 37 interactive activities including language tasters, planetarium gazing, panel discussions, virtual reality gaming and lab experiments

Buoyed by a record number of event registrations, the University welcomed more than 10,000 visitors on the day, with future students and their families joined by alumni and community members in exploring the University and its programs.

More than 750 staff were involved in this year’s event, with academics providing much-appreciated course advice. Alongside student ambassadors and volunteers, staff helped create a distinctly welcoming environment on the day, with several students noting that the ‘vibe’ at Macquarie was much more friendly than at other universities they had visited.

Popular new features this year included a Chill Out Zone by the lake, where Student Wellbeing therapy dogs (pictured, right) proved to be a big hit with visitors of all ages. Special events were also held to welcome rural and regional students (some of whom spent 10 hours travelling to and from the campus on coaches provided by the University) as well as Year 11 high achievers and applicants to the University’s Leaders and Achievers entry scheme.

Maria Souris, Executive Director of Domestic Student Recruitment, says the day was a wonderful showcase for Macquarie, thanks to the dedication of staff, students and professional teams over the many months of preparation and planning leading up to the event.

“Open Day is truly a whole-of-University effort, and we are so grateful to all the staff and students who helped make our 2023 event such a big success. To everyone who was involved, we offer our heartfelt thanks.”

Having spent the day chatting with visitors, students and staff, Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton says the day “could not have gone better” in his view.

“Clearly, much care and attention went into every aspect of how we presented Macquarie at Open Day,” he said. “I am very grateful for everyone’s efforts to show Macquarie at our best.”
