Their roles might be diverse – encompassing distinguished professors, librarians and IT specialists – but there is one thing this special group of staff have in common: a commitment to Macquarie University that few others can match.

Twenty-seven staff were celebrated at a special anniversary event on 29 March, which recognised those who have recently surpassed 25 or 40 years of employment at Macquarie. Collectively, these staff members represent an astonishing 766 years of service to the University.

Chief People Officer David Ward warmly welcomed the staff and their guests, joking that with only nine months of service to Macquarie under his belt, he had a long way to go before achieving the feat of the two 40-year Macquarie veterans present: Wendy Palmer, Site Services Coordinator at the University Library and Naguib Kanawati, Distinguished Professor of Ancient History in the Department of History and Archaeology.

Joining Mr Ward in congratulating the long-serving staff, Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton envisaged being in their shoes and being able to boast such a significant contribution to the University.

“The people we are honouring today have been here for just under, or just over, half the lifetime of Macquarie University,” noted Professor Dowton. “When we think about how the University has changed over this time – not only in the transformation of our physical campus but also in the sense that we have built something much bigger than ourselves and extended the realms of possibility – this has only been possible because of your contributions.

“It is a privilege to be here to say thank you. Not only for your part in our history, but for all the success that is yet to be measured and all the stories that are yet to be told.”
