Informed and empowered: a new approach to internal communication at Macquarie

As a university driven by collaboration, the way we communicate and share information with each other is integral to our success.

Yet we know that staff are not always able to find the critical information they need to do their jobs well. And some stories of innovation and accomplishment – the stories that collectively form the narrative of our University – are not broadly known.

This is why the University embarked on an important program of work to improve internal communication at Macquarie under the Our people stream of the Operating Plan, supported by strategic investment through the Digital transformation stream.

Some elements of the program are well established, including the Senior Leaders’ Forum. The Forum has improved the way we share insights and strategic priorities within the leadership group and cascade those down to teams.

Our focus now turns, in earnest, to a cornerstone of the Our people program: the development of a staff intranet. This digital resource will significantly improve the employee experience at Macquarie, by providing a central, reliable information hub that makes it easier for teams to share information with the rest of the organisation. The intranet project team will comprise staff from across the University to ensure this resource is designed with the varied perspectives and requirements of our faculties and portfolios in mind.

Today marks a preliminary step towards the staff intranet, as we launch a refreshed This Week staff news format. You will find our core missions and functions holistically reflected in the new content categories, which provide a comprehensive picture of what makes being part of Macquarie University so great. This representation will flow through to the staff intranet when it is launched in the first quarter of 2024.

Together with my colleagues in the Executive Group, I look forward to sharing updates and insights in the Leader’s Desk column. I hope you will also join me in discovering the remarkable stories of our people in Humans of Macquarie – starting with the inspiring tale of South Sudanese student Rebecca Nyarnhom.

Sincerely

S Bruce Dowton MD

Vice-Chancellor
