While their hearts might often be on the playing field, this group of elite student sportspeople have eyes firmly on their future – a future supported by a Macquarie University degree that will serve them long after they have hung up their boots.
On 26 October our University celebrated the outstanding contribution of its athletes, both on the field and towards university life, with the presentation of the 2022 University Sport Awards.
Since 2019 the Awards have been on COVID hiatus so there was marked excitement about being able to recognise three years of sporting achievement in person. The recognition included the eight students who represented Australia at the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and our two Commonwealth Games representatives.
Coveted Full Blue awards were bestowed on ten athletes who demonstrated achievement at an elite sporting level as well as contributions to the mission of Macquarie University. Another ten students were awarded a Half Blue.
Chancellor Dr Martin Parkinson AC PSM presented the prestigious Chancellor’s Award to Manly-Warringah player Tom Trbojevic. The 2021 Dally M Medallist completed his Applied Finance and Commerce degrees at Macquarie earlier this year.
Among other notable attendees was Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton.
The Vice-Chancellor formally launched the Macquarie University Student Sports Fund at the Awards. Thanks to generous donors, the fund will support Macquarie students and our University teams to participate in state, national and international sporting competitions.
Lizzy Clarkson, Macquarie alumni and captain of Australia’s gold medal-winning 2018 women’s softball team, said the fund will provide more equitable access to sports programs for a broader range of students.
Congratulations to all our 2022 Macquarie University Sport Awards winners
