Keeping Safe at Work

Having a safe place to work is fundamental to everyone at Macquarie and with October being Safe Work Month the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) team would like to remind us about the tools, support and information available to our community.

The theme this year is Know Safety, Work Safely, which focuses on understanding what can cause injury at work, the practicable ways to prevent being harmed and knowing what is in place to get you back to work as soon as possible.

“A safe and healthy workplace benefits everyone and is more easily achieved when everyone involved in the work communicates with each other to identify hazards and risks, share health and safety concerns, and works collaboratively to find solutions” says Lance Islip Manger, Workplace, Health and Safety.

The WHS hub is a one stop resource for health and safety information including risk management around various hazards and the expected ways to manage the risks. To make it easier for staff the site is divided into general safety and specialised topics. Take some time this month to read through the site.

If you are injured at work or need to report a hazard or near miss you need to ROAR. ROAR is the safety reporting software system. You can read more about hazard and incident reporting and investigation here.

Macquarie prides itself on the personal safety of staff and students. A dedicated Campus Security resource is available to provide information on what to do in an emergency including how to report incidents or threatening behaviour, security escorts after dark and  a map of all the blue emergency points. Take time to read this information during Safe Work month and if you have any questions, please contact Campus Security on campussecurity@mq.edu.au.

The WHS Team will be consulting across campus during safety month on the proposed MQ WHS Strategy based around the International Standard for safety management systems. Watch out for requests for feedback from your Health and Safety reps and WHS Committees. If you have any questions email them on  whs@mq.edu.au
