New ARC Training Centre to transform growing Bioactives industry 

The new Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Training Centre (ITTC) for Facilitated Advancement of Australia’s Bioactives (FAAB) hosted at Macquarie University was officially launched on 15 August by Jerome Laxale MP, Federal Member for Bennelong and Judi Zielke, CEO of the Australian Research Council. The Centre’s goal is to help Australia benefit from the booming global demand for bioactive products. 

 Supported by a $5 million ARC grant, over the next five years, Macquarie University’s FAAB brings together Deakin University, the University of South Australia and Western Sydney University with research universities in the UK, Germany and Brazil, and 14 respected Australian industry partners. The team will develop methods for characterising products of high molecular complexity to address current and emerging consumer health and healthier lifestyle choices.

History Week 2022 

Macquarie celebrated History Week from Monday 5 September to Friday 9 September with events, workshops and discussions that celebrate Macquarie’s rich connection to the past. 

Edward Cooper, Assistant at Macquarie University History Museum and Bachelor of Archaeology student, and Hannah Vogel, PhD candidate and mentor to undergraduate students, hosted Object Handling Sessions both staff and students.

Professor Peter Greste Public Lecture 

Earlier this month, Professor Peter Greste from MCCALL held a major public lecture at the Macquarie University City Campus. The audience heard from the award-winning journalist as he drew on his own experience under arrest on terrorism charges in Egypt.

Specialised Lecturer and Valedictorian imparts wisdom at the August graduation ceremonies 

During the August graduation ceremonies,Hamid Yahyaei, Specialised Lecturer and PhD Candidate in the Department of Applied Finance and recipient of the university medal gave his valedictorian speech imparting some learnings and special words of advice to the crowd.  
 
“…I’ve gained tremendous wisdom when it comes to living a life of meaning and purpose…we all have the power to make positive changes in our communities,” said Yahyaei.

Social Sciences Week 2022 

The School of Social Sciences celebrated Social Sciences Week 2022 from 5 – 9 September with a range of public discussions and lectures, as well as student workshops, including a session on applying for post-doctoral positions in the Social Sciences. 

Associate Professor Andrew McGregor from Macquarie University, alongside academics from other universities, shared insights about two key stages of the recruitment process: writing applications that stand out and impressing an interview. The session was targeted at recent or close to completion PhD candidates seeking careers in the social sciences.

Macquarie receives a visit from Australia’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organization  

Australia’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organization, His Excellency, Mr George Mina, visited Macquarie University on 12 August 2022 for a round-table discussion on the topic of environment and trade.

The 2-hour session featured 15 expert guests selected from academia, government and private practice who have expertise in this field. The roundtable provided a platform for an exchange of thoughts on how trade can be conducted in a sustainable way, and the importance of climate change being front and centre in the current policy debates.

“It was an excellent dialogue between key players in government, academia and private practice and the first of its kind run by the Centre for Energy, Natural Resources, Innovation and Transformation (CENRIT),” says Maureen Klar, Senior Research Fellow at CENRIT.

Pakistan Independence Day at Macquarie 

On 11 August a celebration of the 75th Independence Day of Pakistan took place at Macquarie. The celebrations were attended by students and staff. Muhammad Sheryar Khan, Deputy Consul General of Pakistan Consulate General, Sydney office was among the many dignitaries. Speeches were given by Mr Khan, Tanveer Shaheed, Deputy Director, International Global and Domestic Student Recruitment and Taimia Zahid, President of Pakistani Students Association (Pakistanis at Macquarie). The event hosted by the Pakistani Students Association demonstrated the spirit of multiculturalism at Macquarie.
