Awards continue for Ablaze
Honorary Lecturer, Dr Alec Morgan from the Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language, and Literature (MCCALL), has been shortlisted for the Betty Roland Prize for Scriptwriting for his feature documentary, Ablaze. The award is part of the 2022 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and the winners will be announced on the eve of the Sydney Writers’ Festival on Monday 16 May at the NSW State Library. Ablaze tells the story of the first Aboriginal filmmaker, William ‘Bill’ Onus, shedding new light on an unsung hero of Australia’s black rights movement

2021 ARC Linkage Projects Round 2 Success
Congratulations to Macquarie researchers who have been awarded a combined total of $915,046 in the recent 2021 ARC Linkage Projects Round 2 outcomes.
Associate Professor Donna Houston, Associate Professor Kate Lloyd, Dr Miriam Williams and Dr Justine Lloyd from the Faculty of Arts along with colleagues from their partner organisation, the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, received $254,046 for their research on ‘The power of public spaces to connect communities and places which aims to uncover the vital role of public spaces during COVID-19 and in a time of climate change’.
Professor Stuart Jackson and Associate Professor Alexander Fuerbach from the Faculty of Science and Engineering along with colleagues from The University of Western Australia and their partner organisation, the Australian Institute of Robotic Orthopaedics, received $661,000 for their research on ‘Optimising lasers for ablation of structurally complex solid non-metals’. This research will provide long term benefits to the aerospace and healthcare industries and, be a boost to Australia’s manufacturing sector.
Living Seawalls Project takes home a Banksia
Congratulations to Associate Professor Melanie Bishop and Associate Professor Katie Dafforn, from the School of Natural Sciences, who co-lead the marine science initiative ‘Living Seawalls’, which has won the 2022 Biodiversity Award Category at the 33rd National Banksia Sustainability Awards. The Banksia Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that believes in the power of social and environmental impact through community engagement and sustainable business practices.
2021 John Love Award for Technical Optics
Congratulations to the Redback Systems start-up company which has been awarded the 2021 John Love Award for Technical Optics by the Australian and New Zealand Optical Society. The group is comprised of Dr Matt van Breugel, Professor David Coutts, Dr Christian Schwab, Associate Professor Thomas Volz, and Dr Lachlan Rogers from the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Dr Tobias Feger from Australian Astronomical Optics-MQ.
Innovative work in AI recognised
Congratulations to Honorary Associate Professor Denis Bauer from Applied BioSciences who was awarded the AI in Innovation Award at the 2022 Women In AI Awards. Dr Bauer was also named as the first runner-up for the overall Women In AI Award.
