Welcome to Country video – updated version to be used at events

Following the passing of a respected Dharug Elder, an updated version of the University’s Welcome to Country video has been produced, with the appropriate opening warning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers.

“For some Aboriginal peoples, strict cultural practices prohibit them from seeing an image of a deceased person,” explains Leanne Holt, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy). “As part of the University’s commitment to Indigenous Australians, it’s important that we are mindful and respectful of the beliefs and practices of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within our University community.

“Staff should ensure they are using this latest version of the Welcome to Country video when hosting events.”

Walanga Muru fosters a meaningful understanding and respect for Aboriginal cultural values, histories, beliefs, practices, knowledges and philosophies via their Manwari Cultural Safety training programs for staff and students.  If you are interested in taking part in this training, email walangamuruadmin@mq.edu.au
