Faculties leadership update

As the Operating Plan’s model for academic leadership comes into fruition, the University is pleased to have recently confirmed a number of staff in faculty leadership positions.

Faculty of Arts

Professor Panos Vlachopoulos has been appointed Deputy Dean, Education and EmployabilityPanos has been the Associate Dean Quality and Standards in the Faculty since 2016 and was Associate Dean Learning and Teaching in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences from 2014 to 2016.

Panos is an experienced and innovative university teacher with international teaching experience in academia in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Australia. He has played a leading role in the Macquarie University Curriculum Transformation Project and the renewal of the Bachelor of Arts.

Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences

Professor Catherine Dean becomes Deputy Dean, Education and Employability. She has been Deputy Dean in the Faculty since 2017 and Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching since 2018. Cath has led educational endeavours in the faculty including the introduction of the Doctor of Medicine (Macquarie MD), the Master of Public Health and NSW’s first professional entry Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) degree.  Her leadership was recognised with the Vice-Chancellor’s Educational Leader Award in 2019.

Professor Roger Chung is appointed Deputy Dean, Research and Innovation, having previously served as the faculty’s Associate Dean (Research). Roger is a Professor of Neurobiology and Neurochemistry within Macquarie’s Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research and won the Jim Piper Award for Excellence in Research Leadership at the 2019 Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Staff Awards.

Faculty of Science and Engineering

Professor David Coutts has been appointed new Deputy Dean, Research and Innovation.  David is a Professor of Physics and a leader in the development of laser and optical fibre technologies which he is now applying to astronomical instrumentation for the detection of exoplanets.  He is currently the Associate Dean, Research and a member of the ARC College of Experts.  He is a former head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and former Director of the MQ Photonics Research Centre.

Macquarie Business School

Professor Leonie Tickle has been appointed Deputy Dean, Research and Innovation, having previously served as the faculty’s Associate Dean Learning and Teaching. Leonie, who is a Professor of Actuarial Studies, has received national awards for her research into longevity modelling and forecasting and for learning and teaching.

Professor Yvonne Breyer has been appointed Deputy Dean, Education and Employability. Yvonne is an award-winning academic with expertise in online learning, curriculum development, student engagement, and digital transformation strategy. Yvonne has led several initiatives with international reach and global impact.

Yvonne has been at Macquarie since 2010 and has held a number of roles during that time including Program Director, Global MBA, Design & Experience, MQBS Head of Learning Futures, Chair of the Senate Learning & Teaching Committee and, most recently, MQBS Interim Associate Dean Learning and Teaching.


The Faculty of Science and Engineering has also announced the departure of their General Manager Rebecca Bond at the end of this year. Rebecca has made the difficult decision to move back to Melbourne with her family.

Rebecca will continue at Macquarie until 31 December, working with newly appointed Interim Faculty General Manager Dr Katrina Sealey on key projects including the formation of the faculty’s new schools and a business case for the relocation of Engineering, AAO and Physics and Astronomy to the main campus.
