Staff obligations under Australia’s Foreign Relations Act 2020

The Federal Government’s Australia’s Foreign Relations Act 2020 came into force on 10 March 2021 and requires the University to notify the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of new arrangements with foreign government entities or non-autonomous foreign universities.

The Department must be informed when new foreign arrangements that meet the Act’s criteria are a) proposed; b) agreed; or c) varied.

An online form is being developed by Research Services to streamline this process, which will be shared with staff once available. Until this time, please contact foreign.relations@mq.edu.au for advice on how the new reporting requirements may relate to you and your work.

Macquarie must also notify the Australian Government of all existing foreign arrangements that are with foreign government entities or non-autonomous foreign universities by 10 June 2021. Further information will be provided about this process at a later date.

If you are the custodian of a written foreign arrangement with a foreign government entity or a foreign university, you can seek advice from the foreign.relations@mq.edu.au email and ask to be added to the University’s Foreign Relations communications distribution list.
