On yer bike, Macquarie!

Would you ever describe your commute as joyful?

If you’ve ever cycled to work, the answer is likely yes. As we discovered in our recent feature on Macquarie’s Cycling Ambassador Network, staff who cycle to work enjoy a commute that ‘ticks all the boxes’ – it’s great for health and fitness, COVID-safe, cost-efficient, sustainable and connects you to nature and the landscape, which is great for mental health and stress release.

Whether you’re already a keen cyclist, or you’re keen to give it a try, October is a great month to get on your bike and join the thousands of Sydneysiders taking part in the 2020 Biketober Business Challenge.

How it works

An initiative of the NSW Government’s ‘Get Healthy at Work program’, the challenge sees participants logging bike rides of 10 minutes or more – either as part of a commute, or for leisure – through the month of October to earn points and win prizes (as well as a coveted ‘Top rider’ or ‘Top commuter’ crown). Workplaces also compete against each other to see who can get the most people in their organisation cycling.

Prizes include a Sydney Seaplane brunch flight for two, a Hunter Valley hot air balloon flight, restaurant and experience vouchers, cycling equipment and Western Plains Zoo passes.

There’s cash, holiday and restaurant voucher prizes for people who encourage others to join the challenge – because it’s not only about who cycles farthest or most often, but about encouraging as many people as possible to give cycling a go.

Prizes and freebies for Macquarie staff

Thanks to the generous support of Campus Life and other campus outlets, a range of prizes will be on offer for Macquarie staff participating in Biketober (more details to come).

Never cycled before?

No worries – last year, 613 Biketober participants were cycling for the first time. There’s even a special $200 day spa prize, exclusive to new riders.

Register before 1 October to win an eBike

All participants who register by midnight 30 September go into the draw for a Bosch-powered eBike worth $3899.  You can register as an individual, or as part of the Macquarie University team to help us.
