Beware of the latest wave of phishing attacks

There has been a recent increase in phishing emails and in staff clicking on links in them.

Phishing attacks can lead to theft of your personal information and significant financial loss and reputational damage to the University.

To avoid falling victim to phishing emails yourself, please follow these guidelines:

  • Before clicking on a link or opening an attachment, check if the email is out of character or unexpected – the most successful phishing emails come from the compromised account of someone you know.
  • The most effective recent technique is to send a PDF file that has a “Log in to collect” link to a fake Office 365 website.
  • The two most widespread and successful phishing themes are “You’ve been locked out of your account” or “Someone has sent you a file”.
  • Always report suspicious emails with the “Junk” button in Outlook or forward to spam@mq.edu.au.
