New homes for Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science and Education

As you are no doubt aware, organisational changes to some faculty structures are in progress. During the transition, faculty deans are committed to ensuring the continued strong success, academic cohesion and collaboration of the high-performing departments affected.

Throughout January, a Transition Steering Committee – chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton – and colleagues across the University have worked extensively to plan and manage the transition of the Departments of Psychology, Linguistics and Cognitive Science into the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) and the School of Education into the Faculty of Arts.

Departments of Psychology, Linguistics and Cognitive Science join FMHS

For FMHS, the change represents a significant increase in staff and academic activity in both education and research missions for the enlarged Faculty.

“Whilst change is always challenging, I do believe this represents a significant opportunity for the University to strengthen its academic mission in common areas shared by FMHS and the incoming Departments,” says Professor Patrick McNeil, Executive Dean of FMHS.

“I believe both the enlarged Faculty and MQ Health will benefit from the strength of clinical courses, health-relevant learning and research being undertaken within the Human Sciences Departments.”

From 17 February FMHS will expand to include:

  • the Department of Psychology, the Department of Cognitive Science, the Department of Linguistics and the clinics embedded in these departments
  • the MQ Health Speech and Hearing Clinic
  • a number of professional support staff at the Faculty level

On 2 March, research support staff will join the FMHS Research team. And on 23 March, a number of professional staff will join FMHS to provide student services support.

The School of Education joins the Faculty of Arts

“We are delighted to welcome the new School of Education to the Faculty of Arts,” says Professor Martina Möllering, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

“The addition of the School of Education, with its reputation for world-class educational studies, to our community of scholars in the Faculty of Arts will create new interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement opportunities, and I look forward to working more closely with our colleagues in the School.”

The School of Education will formally join the Faculty on 17 February. Research support and student services support staff will join the Faculty on 2 March and 23 March, respectively.
