Two Macquarie teams have been selected for the CSIRO’s coveted ON Accelerate program – a three-month accelerator supporting ventures with high potential impact.

Macquarie’s Redback Systems team is working on a compact and affordable ultra high-resolution spectrograph, which can be used for anything from recording the material composition of stars and galaxies, to spotting defects in next-generation nanomaterials.

The HydGene Renewables team has developed a sugar-powered biohydrogen electricity generator that supplies cost-effective carbon-neutral electricity. Read more about this technology in The Lighthouse >

With support from the Commercialisation and Innovation team, Macquarie has had a team in almost every cohort of ON’s Prime and Accelerator streams since the program began.

Modular Photonics – which completed the ON Accelerate program in 2016 – is now internationally recognised as a leader in photonics innovation.

Two resident companies in the Macquarie University Incubator have been named ‘Tomorrow Makers’, after securing grants from AMP’s Tomorrow Fund.

Adam Martin – a Senior Research Fellow in the University’s Dementia Research Centre – will use his $38,000 grant to advance his work in growing neurons for use in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.

Anne Thompson is using her $42,000 grant to grow her Sustainable Schoolwear business. She has developed a school polo shirt made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and hopes to start a circular program for schools that will reduce textile waste by recycling uniform fabrics.

The recently refurbished Student Hub space within the Macquarie University International College and English Language Centre has been named Best Learning Environment (New Building or Renovation under $2m) in the Association for Learning Environment’s NSW Chapter Awards.

This project was managed by Macquarie’s Property team, designed by architectural firm Gardner Wetherill and built by Prime Constructions.

A record five Macquarie students have been selected among the 125 New Colombo Plan (NCP) 2020 scholars – the highest number of Macquarie scholars in a single year since the program began.

Joshua Dale Santos, Danielle Le Large, Darcy Dunkin, Molly Glendenning and Aidan Dunphy-Smith will all be taking up exciting learning opportunities at various locations in the Indo-Pacific.

This follows the University’s record funding in the New Colombo Plan Mobility Program.
