Toner recycling at work

Macquarie University staff are able to recycle printer or multi-functional device (MFD) toner cartridges via a program called Cartridges 4 Planet Ark, a product stewardship program co-sponsored by Konica Minolta, Macquarie University’s MFD technology supplier. Collections, recycling and materials recovery is all undertaken by Close the Loop under a brand promise of Zero Waste to Landfill. Toner cartridges recycled on campus through this system are collected and sorted at the Close the Loop facility in Melbourne, where they are processed through the ‘Green Machine’. After being crushed and the materials separated, they are recycled into various applications.

Here’s what they become through this program:

  • Clean plastic streams are reused in pens, new cartridges and other plastic products.
  • Residual inks are made into recycled pens and artist ink.
  • Metals are extracted and made into new products (used in cans, fridges and other items).
  • Toner is used turned into road surface through a product called TonerPave asphalt and TonerPlas – over 1000kms have already been laid.

All other materials and contaminated plastics are recycled into eWood – a timber replacement product for garden beds, fencing, and outdoor flooring and decking.

Any time your department’s MFD printer ink runs out and the toner cartridge needs replacing, simply place the empty cartridge into the lined recycling box and follow the instructions on the side of the box when it is full.

To minimise waste to landfill by creating post-consumer recycled items. This saves the resources and energy that go into making products from virgin materials, which reduces the need for mining, conserves raw materials and reduces waste going to landfill.

Cartridges 4 Planet Ark or Konica Minolta branded toner cartridge recycling boxes are available across campus. Contact sustainability@mq.edu.au to find where your closest collection point is or to arrange one for your area.
