Support November’s Mental Wheels Tour for men’s mental health

Olympian Clinton Hill will be among the riders in this month’s Mental Wheels Tour, a charity  event supporting MindSpot, MQ Health’s mental health clinic.

The former Australian 400m champion and Olympic relay silver medallist has battled anxiety for years, and is among several top athletes who have spoken publicly about their struggle with the mental pressures of training and competition.

With men being less likely to seek help for mental health issues, the Mental Wheels Tour aims to reduce stigma around mental health support for men, while raising awareness and funds for the University’s MindSpot Clinic and eCentreClinic, both of which offer online programs that can be completed anonymously.

Director of the eCentreClinic, Associate Professor Blake Dear, says men typically don’t feel comfortable speaking about their emotional wellbeing.

“We know that 20 per cent of men will experience a clinical level of anxiety and depression, and very few reach out for help. They see it as something very personal, so are unlikely to speak to friends or family about their symptoms.

“With our clinics, men can access a mental health professional with the click of a mouse.”

The Mental Wheels Tour is on from 21 to 23 November. Show your support for men’s mental health by  making a donation.
