The Central Courtyard precinct redevelopment project includes the rehabilitation of the ‘Reach 3’ section of Mars Creek.
This portion of the creek was diverted underground in the 1960s, flowing under Gymnasium Road through a stormwater pipe and re-emerging as it joins the iconic Macquarie University lake. The works will create a new, naturalised surface channel through part of the original creek bed (known as daylighting), reinstating the riparian zone (the landscaped area through which the creek flows).
New eel pathway
In addition to daylighting the creek, native freshwater eels will be offered a new migration route from their existing habitat in the University’s lake, to the rehabilitated upper reaches of Mars Creek via a re-made culvert inlet to be built as part of the project.
Timing
To accommodate the Mars Creek works, a new fencing line will be added to the Central Courtyard site from late July and will remain for approximately seven months.
Once complete, benefits of the combined water catchment and creek rehabilitation strategy include an improved amenity for the University community; flood mitigation, both on-campus and to the downstream flows in the Lane Cove River (Sydney Harbour); and water purification and pollution control.
New amphitheatre
Another element of the Mars Creek work includes rebuilding the amphitheatre nearby on higher ground. It will have generous, turfed seating supported by sandstone terraces facing a stage. The amphitheatre will remain in sight from the new 1 Central Courtyard building. In accessing the new amphitheatre, pedestrians can use the new timber footbridge or large stepping stones to cross the daylighted, rock-lined creek bed that will host replanted and landscaped surrounds.
