Every month we celebrate some of the impressive achievements in the Macquarie community. Got something to share for next month? Tell us.

For the second consecutive year, Macquarie University has been awarded Silver Employer status in the annual Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI) awards. The AWEI drives best practice for LGBTIQ+ workplace inclusion and sets a comparative benchmark for Australian employers across all sectors.

Recognition as a Silver Employer affirms Macquarie’s commitment and action on creating a safe and supportive culture for all LGBTIQ+ members of our community – through our inclusive workplace policies and processes, education and engagement activities, and network of allies.

This year’s award especially acknowledges the significant support within our community for LGBTIQ+ inclusion. Together, the members of our Ally Network and the Queer Collective are visible champions for equality and actively promote a campus where people who identify as LGBTIQ+ can work and study free from sexual discrimination or prejudice, reach their full potential and fully contribute to the University’s success.
More information and resources for staff are available on the University’s Sexual and Gender Diversity website. The Ally Network and the Queer Collective websites are also useful points of contact to find out more about LGBTIQ+ Inclusion at Macquarie. For more information on the awards, visit their webpage.

james_guthrie_web Professor James Guthrie from Macquarie University’s Macquarie Business School has been honoured with an Order of Australia as part of the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

The prestigious honour was awarded to Professor Guthrie in recognition of his significant service to higher education in the field of accounting.

With a career in accounting education that spans more than 35 years, Professor Guthrie has held positions at various Australian and Italian universities as well as being the Head of Academic Relations at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand from 2008 to 2017.

Professor Guthrie is also the current co-editor of Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal (AAAJ); a highly ranked and peer-reviewed academic journal covering accounting theory and practice. He has researched and published widely in the fields of public sector accounting, social and environmental accounting and intellectual capital, including the recent publication of the definitive work, The Routledge Companion to Intellectual Capital.

ian_webCongratulations to Professor Ian Wright who has been elected as an Australian Academy of Science Fellow. The Academy has inducted 22 new Fellows, elected for their outstanding contributions to their disciplines.

Professor Wright is best known for global scale analysis of plant traits, for careful quantification of plant structure-function relationships, and for using concepts from economics to understand plant evolution and plant ecological strategies.

Professor Wright expressed his excitement at being elected to the Academy: “I am deeply honoured by this recognition. I was lucky to have excellent mentors early in my career, at the University of Melbourne, Macquarie University and the University of Minnesota.

“My work is inherently collaborative, and it’s largely through the intersections of my expertise with that of collaborators that we’ve made such significant advances.”

marosCongratulations to Professor Maroš Servátka from the Macquarie Business School, who has been awarded the Ronald Coase Institute Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Bestowed annually to a graduate of the Institute’s workshops, the award is given to an alumnus who best exemplifies the impact of the Institute’s training and continuing scholarly support. Final decisions are made by the Board of Directors that over the years included several Nobel laureates (Ronald Coase, Douglass North, Ken Arrow, Elinor Ostrom, and currently Roger Myerson) and renowned economists, journal editors, and pioneers of institutional economics.

Professor Servátka was selected for the 2018 award in recognition of his contributions to the Institute’s mission of training young scholars in institutional analysis, as well as his academic contribution to the expanded understanding of economic institutions and their impact on behaviours of economic agents. Professor Servátka accepted the award and spoke at an alumni dinner in Warsaw last month.
