Stand against LGBTIQ discrimination: let’s make every day IDAHOBIT

The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) is a day to stand with the LGBTIQ+ community and is officially on Friday 17 May.

Here at Macquarie, the Queer Collective will be celebrating the day before – Thursday 16 May – to raise awareness of violence, discrimination, and repression of LGBTIQ+ communities worldwide. All staff are welcome to attend (see event page for details).

How can you get involved?

Staff and students are invited to contribute to IDAHOBIT by:

  • Attending and/or volunteering at the day’s events.
  • Baking something for the bake sale.
  • Contributing an artwork for the Queer Galleries exhibition if you identify as queer.
  • Contributing a written work for the Queer Collective’s Zine magazine if you identify as queer.
  • Talking to colleagues/students about IDAHOBIT and share the program of events.

Email macqueer@gmail.com or workplacediversityinclusion@mq.edu.au for more information on how to get involved.

Ally Network update

The Ally Network, a group of Macquarie staff and students committed to creating an inclusive and respectful culture at the University for LGBTIQ+ community members, will be holding a forum on Wednesday 15 May. All members of the Ally Network are encouraged to attend.

Join the Ally Network

For staff and students interested in becoming members of the Ally Network, two Ally training sessions will be held in May:

The training involves a professional development workshop to increase knowledge, understanding and awareness of diversity of gender expression, issues affecting LGBTIQ+ staff and students, LGBTIQ+-related support at Macquarie, and the role of an Ally in fostering an inclusive community.

Allies are trained to be a contact point on campus for anyone interested in, or affected by, issues involving sexuality or gender identity.  They’re empowered to act as agents of change who challenge homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism and any other forms of gender-based, sex-based, and sexuality-based discriminatory attitudes and behaviours.

Email workplacediversityinclusion@mq.edu.au for more information.
