8 Macquarie staff perks you might not know about

Many of the benefits of working at Macquarie are obvious as soon as you set foot on campus. The beautiful open spaces; fantastic campus facilities like the Sport and Aquatic Centre, food outlets and quality onsite childcare. But there are other benefits for Macquarie staff that you might not even be aware of…

The gift of time

Macquarie’s generous leave entitlements for full-time and part-time staff give you the time you need to rest and recharge, look after your family life, or pursue your personal or professional passions. This includes:

  • Paid concessional days over Christmas / New Year (see the payroll calendar for 2019 dates).
  • The option to purchase up to four weeks of additional leave per year.
  • Two days of volunteer leave per year.
  • Leave for commitments that matter to you, like community service, religious and cultural celebrations, as well as study and examinations.

Visit the leave page for specific policies and procedures around taking leave.

Flex those arrangements

Recognising the importance of work-life balance, staff can apply for flexible working arrangements under certain conditions and in agreement with their line manager. This might include part-time and job-share, working from home, compressed fortnights or adjusted start and finish times so you can commute outside peak hours.

A bit more $ in your pocket

Several discounts and offers are available to Macquarie staff who are trying to reduce their cost of living:

  • Corporate discount on Medibank health insurance.
  • Special rates at the Sport and Aquatic Centre (memberships for staff start at around $35 a fortnight)
  • Salary packaging to reduce your taxable income. Through our packaging provider NLC you can salary sacrifice things like car leases, childcare fees, IT equipment, professional memberships and magazine/journal subscriptions.

Very super super

On top of Macquarie’s 17 per cent superannuation contribution for continuing and fixed term (two years or more) staff, which is well above the standard 9.5 per cent, staff also have access to free advice on how to build their future financial security by making an appointment with UniSuper’s on-campus consultant.

Free counselling and coaching

Macquarie staff and their families have access to six free counselling or coaching sessions with our Employee Assistance provider Benestar. Read our road test of the Benestar service >>

Healthier and happier

Free massages, monthly wellbeing lunch and learns, our annual Wellbeing Week for staff – there are so many ways Macquarie can help you to stay healthy and well.

Support to grow and learn

Macquarie is all about learning and discovery, but that isn’t limited to just our students or our researchers. Macquarie staff are actively encouraged to learn and develop through supports and schemes like Study for Staff, development grants, postgraduate and MGSM scholarships for professional staff and the staff mobility initiative.

Through the Macquarie University Incubator, staff can also take their business idea to the next level.

Services at your fingertips

Where else can you get a world-class hospital and medical clinics, speech, hearing and psychology clinics, and amazing galleries and museums, just outside your office door?

  1. It still baffles me that discrimination seems to be so often overlooked when it is not illegal. Paying different amounts of superannuation depending upon the length of a person’s tenure — or how many hours they work, or whether the hours they work are regular or irregular — may (prima facie) be a legal form of discrimination, but that doesn’t make it right.

Note that the existing superannuation payment structure could be ruled illegal if it can be construed as a constructive form of illegal discrimination.
For example, say that more female staff are on casual contracts; if so, then paying staff on those types of contracts less superannuation could be interpreted as sexist — and hence illegal.

    1. Hi Equal-opportunity Defender,

The rates of superannuation for Macquarie’s employees are set in our enterprise agreements, which are approved by the Fair Work Commission to ensure they are lawful and meet employment standards. In our most recent enterprise agreements for academic and professional staff, 17% superannuation has been extended to all fixed-term staff, phased in over the life of the agreement.

The University’s rates of superannuation are consistent with the remainder of the sector, and significantly higher than most other industries.

    1. Access to the Kanopy service is available as a result of a subscription managed by the Library and it is to be used for learning & teaching purposes only.

    1. Hi Denis

Some benefits (including paid leave) are only available to full-time and part-time staff, but many of these benefits are available to all staff (including the Employee Assistance Program and free staff massages). Your Human Resources representative can provide more information on any of the staff benefits you are interested in.
