Staff parking rates from 1 May

Ahead of the switch to a digital parking system for staff on 1 May, here’s eight things you need to know – including prices for PAYG (casual parking) and pre-purchased vPermits.

The new parking zones

Rates for both PAYG and vPermits will differ according to the zone. See Campus Parking Map.

Choose only one parking payment type

Both PAYG (casual) and pre-purchased vPermits will be ticketless,  using licence plate recognition technology to confirm parking has been paid for.

vPermits

Choose from 30-day, 90-day or longer permits that run until 31 December 2019.

  • 2019 staff vPermit rates (from 1 May).
  • Available to pre-purchase from Tuesday 23 April at 9am. Links to vPermit purchase will available Macquarie’s parking webpage (mq.edu.au/parking) from this time.
  • Will not be active until 1 May (current permits remain in place until 30 April).
  • Purchase a vPermit at any time during 2019 (costs are calculated on a pro rata basis).

PAYG

Casual parking will be at new, discounted hourly staff rates.

  • 2019 staff PAYG rates – from 1 May.
  • Register via the CellOpark webpage or app from 1 May 2019.
  • Do not use PAYG until 1 May (visitor rates will apply before this date)
  • Available in General Zone carparks only.
  • Will suit staff who occasionally drive to campus.

Multiple vehicles

Multiple vehicles can be linked to a vPermit or PAYG account.

Salary sacrifice

  • Available for vPermits six months and over.
  • Deducted fortnightly, follow the prompts when registering online.
  • Not available for PAYG.

East 2 carpark – staff only

  • A limited number of vPermits will be issued for guaranteed bay availability.
  • Those who miss out on purchasing an East 2 vPermit will be placed on a waiting list. In the meantime, it is recommended that you purchase a vPermit in a different zone.

  1. I fully agree with the below comment about the shambolic ‘manual number plate recognition’ and the ‘human boom gate’ used at the East 2 carpark. I’m eagerly waiting to see the response from Mr Mark Broomfield, Director of Property. (Dear editors, please pass this on to him.)

  2. Dear Manager of the Parking Team – this morning’s entrance at 8:30AM into the East 2 Carpark was shambolic. Where is the automated boom gate for the carpark? Should this not have been made ready weeks ago, since we have all got vPermits now? Why is there one unfortunate person manually checking off registration plates from a clipboard, creating queues past the hospital? If system is not yet ready, it should not have been implemented so early.

  3. I am so sorry but it seems all your parking rates have been explicitly designed to hike rates unreasonably for both students and staff over prior methods and costs and frankly its more than a bit rude given they have been rising every year for the last few years at well over the inflation rate.

Further there are greater restrictions on where staff can park. How do you expect us to get to our work (for this university ) when we already may have to browse three car parking areas to find a spare space.

Staff car parking, particularly when rail is down should not be seen as just another profit enterprise centre for the university. Very off putting and unreasonable.VPermit rates considerably more expensive and for four months less than the old permit rates that permitted staff to park in many more areas. Expect staff not to be on time more often is all I can say.

  4. Hi,
If I purchase a general v-permit, can I park in South 2 and west 5 (different rates)? I’m assuming I purchase the most expensive of the zones and it covers both, rather than having to buy x2 permits?

    1. Hi Kathryn, the rates table (link above) has a column ‘where else can I park?’ and it should indicate which other carpark zones you can also park in, but yes you are correct in assuming that the more expensive vPermit covers its own zone and any that cost the same or less. So if you wanted to park in South 2, you’d need to purchase a vPermit for there and it would allow you to park in all the general zones.

  5. Question regarding the waiting list for East 2 staff. I would like to purchase a vpermit till october this year for East 2 staff car park due to maternity leave at this time. The only way I see this is possible is to purchase 2 x 90 day permits. Thats fine, I am happy to do that. However, at the end of my first 90 day vpermit, does someone on the wait list then get the spot and I risk the chance of missing out on my second 90 day permit prior to my maternity leave?

    1. Hi Amanda, thanks for asking your question as it might apply to other staff members too. Given the anticipated interest in the East 2 staff-only zone, vPermits for that carpark will be sold as a full permit up until the end of the year. Other staff and general carpark zones will have the shorter duration vPermits available, so East 4 might be suitable for you.

    2. Great, thanks Macquarie University. My options are to waste money paying for a car park I won’t be using for 3 months (which I can’t even give away to other staff members due to number plate recognition) OR require walking heavily pregnant over 1km across campus. East 4 is a joke as there is no more than 15 spots and they fill up by 6:30am and is not a reliable source of parking.

This system in no way supports flexible work arrangements for working mothers and makes it extremely difficult to continue working during pregnancy and postnatally.

  6. Hi,

Macquarie students have free parking on Sundays, but I can’t see any information about a staff equivalent. Could you please confirm what days these new parking rates apply? Is it the same as the student policy (i.e. Monday-Saturday)?

    1. Dear Jennifer, we will look into this for you however no-charge parking applies only to those students and staff without a vPermit who use the PAYG system.

  7. Hi Property, I work at Waterloo Rd and have access to a parking space. If I wanted to, could I purchase an East 2 vPermit and still have access to parking at Waterloo Rd? Or, are those of us who work at Waterloo Rd only allowed to purchase the Green zone permit?

    1. Hi Fiona, yes you can purchase a vPermit for an on-campus staff-only carpark (including E2) and still have access to Waterloo Road. The Green Zone permit is the minimum cost to use both on-campus General Zone and Waterloo Road carparks. For those who want to park on campus and use the shuttle, they can select a less expensive option and not park at Waterloo Road. Hope this helps.

  8. As a casual tutor I needed to use my car to transport equipment on 18 March. I parked in West 6 (closest space available), saw the new Cellopark payment instructions and obeyed them!. No prices are advertised on signs. On return (2 X 2hr tutes) the charge was $34.83! I received no emails or news regarding staff parking changes until recently at which point I immediately purchased a monthly staff sticker. Did we casuals miss a memo? Is a refund available as I imagine I am not the only casual obediently following these recent signs and being charged new high cost visitor rates!

    1. Hi David, if you visit http://www.mq.edu.au/parking you will see the current parking rules and fees for staff, students and other groups outlined. This information has been on the website throughout 2018 and clearly states instructions for staff. When the students transitioned to CellOpark in October there was a two-month campaign prior that included newsletter items and emails to staff about CellOpark being only for students. Unfortunately you are one of two people who have mistakenly used CellOpark ahead of the 1 May roll out for staff.

  9. HI,
So the longer permit is still 31 December? so if we get the general zone for $381 – it is only valid from May to December 2019?
    8 months only ?

    1. if this was offered for 12 months, the rate works out to be $571 . Compared to last year, that a bit of a price hike. Who decides on the % increase each year?

    2. Hi Staff Car Park, it’s difficult to compare last year’s rate with the new rates because from 1 May there will be a range of prices and zones to offer more choice. Is there a particular carpark you’re referring to? Also, in 2018 we reduced rates to compensate for the station closure. The Executive Group decides on parking payment and policy.

    3. The majority of the full time staff, park at the general zones – where ever we can find parking. I am not seeing anything ‘new’ or ‘varied options’ with the new parking program, other than to park at the far corner of the university – now titled Staff car park.

Actually, from time to time when we have to go cross campus, we were able to park in East 3/ or 2 – but now with the new zone system. It is restricting staff to be parking in a particular zone. this is less flexible.

Also, Staff who work at the east end of campus, have to pay higher rate to park closer to their work location, or end up walking cross campus.

  10. Will the vpermit payment system be available to preview before Tuesday 23 April?

Because many of us will be on vacation this week, it will not be practical or possible to get assistance if there is a problem on the day. It would be helpful to be able to preview the process before the 9am rush.

BTW when I attempted to post this single comment, I got an error message from the site saying “You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.” My last comment was weeks ago. Is there a comment per year restriction? 🙂

    1. HI Mike

We’ll leave Property team to answer your question re the vPermits but re the comments error, no, we’re not aware of any limits. We’ll investigate with IT – thanks for bringing it to our attention.

    2. Hi Mike, no the vPermit will not be available for sale until the advertised date 23 April. Further information will be on the new website, due to be published on or prior to 23 April. It will have links to purchase a vPermit online and information such as – have your MQ OneID and staff email address, car registration number and which vPermit you’d like to purchase ready. There is no rush – you can purchase after you return from leave. The East 2 carpark is the only zone that may sell out – we don’t have any historic information on whether this approach will sell out or not. Hope this helps, enjoy your vacation.

    3. Hi Property Team

It’s the East2 carpark I’m concerned about – hence the need to book time in my vacation to ensure a spot.

    4. Hi Mike, to be fair to all staff wishing to purchase an E2 vPermit, the online system will operate on a first in first served basis. If you have access to a computer on your holiday you will be at no disadvantage.

  11. Hi
The Application form for staff found on the ‘mq parking site’ does not list an option for the end of 2019 it is only up until April 2019.
Is there an updated form staff can use?

    1. Hi Marcella, the changeover date for parking is 30 April so until then, the information on the staff parking website is correct. If you need to apply for a permit that covers from today until the end of April, you would use the current form and the Cashier’s office will arrange a very short term permit. From 1 May (available for pre-purchase using the online method from 26 April) the new vPermits will be used. Hope this helps.

  12. Is there a problem with the link to this file? ‘2019 staff PAYG rates’ i.e. that apply from 1 May? My two browsers both indicated the file was ‘not found’. 9/4/19
