Switch off before you head off this Friday

The Sustainability team share how Macquarie staff can be part of Earth Hour, this Saturday 30 March at 8.30pm.

Be part of the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. This Earth Hour, it’s easy for all Australians to show they care about our planet: just switch off and #Connect2Earth and you will amplify the national conversation on climate change and biodiversity.

Macquarie University will once again participate in the Earth Hour energy initiative on Saturday 30 March by encouraging staff to turn off all non-essential electrical equipment before taking off for the weekend. Consult with your supervisor, Property or IT if you are not sure about switching off certain devices. With your support we can all make a difference.

Macquarie University continues to implement energy saving initiatives across campus to improve the efficiency of HVAC and lighting systems, smooth our peaks and reduce our baseload energy demand.  However, up to 20 per cent of energy savings can only be achieved by individuals switching off non-essential items when they are not in use. Macquarie has a number of campaigns to support staff to switch off such as the Switch Off, Save Power poster series (download below) and the Turn Off, Turn Green lighting stickers (order by emailing sustainability@mq.edu.au).

Most importantly, unplug yourself as much as you can over the weekend and enjoy some well-deserved rest. Happy Earth Hour!
