Macquarie receives 2018 Australian Rural Education Award

Macquarie University has been awarded the 2018 Australian Rural Education Award by the Society for the Provision of Rural Education in Australia (SPERA) for its Lighthouse Virtual Reality Outreach Project.

The Lighthouse Virtual Reality Outreach Project will provide students in regional and remote schools with an engaging experience of university life. It is designed for a standalone virtual reality headset that offers an immersive experience of university and a hand-controller for triggering interactive events. This is a collaborative project between Department of Computing and Widening Participation Unit.

Associate Professor Manolya Kavakli (Director of Virtual Reality Lab at the Simulation Hub) was provided HEPPP funding for the project and Kevin Lucas (PhD Student) was employed to direct the 360 videos involved in its development. Sonal Singh (Manager, Widening Participation Planning) accepted the award which was for projects that support new and creative thinking in professional practice aimed at improving student outcomes in a rural, regional and/or remote setting. The team is planning to expand on the project next year.

“To win an award that speaks to new and creative thinking in professional practice is a fitting tribute to the new approach to widening participation that MQ adopted in 2018. My thanks to the many people from across the campus who have helped to make this project a reality,” says Pro Vice-Chancellor (Programs and Pathways) Professor Sean Brawley.
