Media highlights: October-November

It’s been a fantastic couple of months for Macquarie staff, with many attracting national media coverage. Here are our media highlights for October and November.


Professor Johanna Westbrook and Dr Neroli Sunderland from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation contributed the article ‘Bullying and harassment of health workers endangers patient safety’ to The ConversationDr Sunderland was interviewed on Radio National AM, Radio National Health Report, ABC Radio Melbourne Drive, ABC News Afternoons, ABC Radio Canberra Mornings, ABC Western Queensland Breakfast and ABC Gippsland Breakfast, and Professor Westbrook was featured in The Adelaide Advertiser and News.com.au regarding patient harm due to bullying and discrimination in the health care system.

Professor Mark Baker from the Department of Biomedical Sciences was featured in The Australian in relation to being selected to chair the Human Proteome Project, a major global scientific effort to identify all of the proteins which are coded by the human genome.

Professor Garry Falloon and Dr Robyn Moloney from the Department of Educational Studies, and current students Elouise Ryrie and Demi Gilbert, were featured in The Australian regarding education students completing teaching practicums in India.

Associate Professor Matt Bower from the Department of Educational Studies was featured in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Canberra Times in relation to a project teaching 3D design and printing to kindergarten pupils.

Professor Catharine Lumby from the Department of Media, Music, Communication and Cultural Studies contributed the article ‘Screentime panic’ to The Canberra Times and the Sydney Morning Herald.

Professor Mark Taylor from the Department of Environmental Sciences was featured in the Sydney Morning Herald, ABC News nationally, Hobart Mercury, The Conversation, WIN News Hobart, The Daily Mail, 5AA Mornings, ABC News Afternoons, 3AW Breakfast and The Canberra Times for his study on the adulteration of local honey.

Dr Mauricio Marrone from the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance featured in the Sydney Morning Herald, the Saturday Age and The Canberra Times on outwitting the email overload at work.

Dr Reidar Lystad from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation featured in The Daily Telegraph, The Courier Mail, The Sunday Times and The Hobart Mercury on his new study which found the hospitalisation rate for sporting injuries endured by children aged 11 to 16 has jumped more than 10 per cent over a decade.
