E2, E3 Carpark works continue

While the works to update and refresh the East 2 and East 3 campus carparks continue, staff are advised to consider other places to park by checking online before leaving home to see where the available car spaces are at Macquarie University.

If you park in a perimeter carpark (Yellow or Blue) there is a free, evening shuttle bus from 4:00pm until 12:30am to get you to your car. See details here.

Thank you for your patience during these necessary works and please accept Macquarie University Property’s apology for any inconvenience.

This project will be completed by the end of December 2018 and is being staged to refresh one carpark level at a time and works include:

  • Painting the ceilings
  • Re-marking lines
  • Installing new, high-efficiency LED lighting
  • Landscaping the surrounding gardens
  • Pressure washing floors, walls and stairways
  • Any minor repairs as needed

Access and usage within the carparks will temporarily change and drivers will be redirected using traffic managers and barriers. Please take care when using these carparks and be aware that parking capacity will be reduced by one level for the duration of the works.

Due to this, it’s a good idea to factor in extra time to find a car space and/or an alternative campus carpark to use.

  1. Hi there,

I parked my car last week in East 2/3. I come around 7am so I always find parking. The workers directed me where to park last week due to painting work. After work on Friday, I noticed that my car was sprayed with white paint (tiny white dots all over my car). I am not sure if others exprienced the same. I am wondering if you can advice me on what I should do. Thanks!

  2. There as no notice of this work before it started and what was actually being carried out. I normally park on the roof and on the first day of the works I drove up to find barrier in the top of the ramp which wasn’t visible until you were on the ramp itself. Why wasn’t signage placed at the entrance to the carpark that the roof level wasn’t available?

I thought it was just being cleaned so the next day I went to park on the roof again to find it full as another floor was closed off and there were no more spaces left. I tried again the next day to find the same. If we had been told about the works and length of time it would take I would not have wasted my time even attempting to park there. This side of campus doesn’t have any other parking areas for staff, the hospital has limited capacity and is very expensive. That means you need to drive out of the University and as you can’t turn right onto Herring Road from Innovation Drive or Talavera Road you have to go around the back of the uni and park near the gym or all the way around to the west area which is course is full due to the examinations. This work should have been carried out on weekends or in the vacation period.

    1. Hi Christina, perhaps you missed the notice in last week’s (7 November) edition of THIS WEEK. As per the comments from that issue, we acknowledged that earlier communication is ideal and regret that on this occasion it just was not possible but it is always the intention to let staff know in advance so they can plan where to park on campus. There are close to 1,000 alternative car spaces available across the university on any given day, throughout the day, even during the current exam period – most likely to be found in the West 5 and West 6 carparks. It is approximately 15 minutes’ walk from one end of the university to the other. Your patience while we carry out these essential works is most appreciated.

  3. This is a complaint.
Although the maintenance upgrade to carpark East 2 and 3, in terms of lighting looks good, the whole situation involving communication and management revolving around the carpark has been infuriating. Staff were not informed that this was going to happen, which is major issue as it effectively voids approx 100 – 120 car spots per day at any given time during the upgrade period. The upgrade period was scheduled at the same time as the train upgrade, which meant more cars on the road. Staff turn up on the first day, to find the car park full at 8:45 am (which never happens on a normal day) and so they are not late for work are forced into Macquarie Hospital carpark, which has coincidentally raised its fees by an astronomical amount, to time with the train closure and the car park upgrade. If they can afford to run late, they are then forced to travel around the country to find parking, as you cannot turn right onto Herring Road from Innovation road, which means you have to end up on Talavera and travel some distance, as the other entrance was closed some time ago. The other issue, is that we are informed we can check the parking situation before we leave home. Well if you need to travel 1-1.5hrs to get to work, the parking situation is not going to be the same. You cannot check the parking situation on route, as you cannot use mobile phones. So this isn’t really a viable solution.
All in all, this upgrade was not communicated effectively.

    1. Hi Mal, thanks for your feedback about the carpark upgrade works. Please refer to the response above that applies to some of your points. With regard to checking the parking status online – agreed it is not advisable to check your device while driving however there are numerous dynamic signs around campus that list (in real time) the number of car spaces available and where they can be found. These signs are at most entry points to the university’s roads. Sorry for the inconvenience that you have experienced.

  4. Can the online car park availability site please be updated to show the current car park availability in the East 2 carpark? Currently it shows that there are 132 available spots in the East 2 carpark but because of the painting work this is not accurate. I used the online site this morning and went to that carpark because it said spots were free but this was not the case.

    1. Hi Megan, thank you for bringing this to our attention. The signs have been re-programmed to reflect a reduction in available spaces however it may be a technical issue that we are now looking into. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience and note that there will be at least one level unavailable in each of E2 and E3 carparks until the end of the year.
