$3 million donation for the Incubator

Dr Colin Lam is a generous philanthropist with a passion for innovation and education. His Chi Wah Foundation has donated $3 million to the Incubator to fund entrepreneurial programs and innovative start-ups that have social impact. The building will now be known as the Macquarie University Chi Wah Foundation Incubator.


15,000km commute for ARC Future Fellow

ARC Future Fellow Dr Kate Selway of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences has recently returned from a fieldwork trip in Greenland, where she led an international team using MT (magnetotellurics) instruments to measure the melt rate of the Greenland ice sheet.

The team documented their adventure – and explain the project’s goals – on their blog, which is a great read for anyone who’s ever wanted to be an ‘adventure scientist’.


Workshop explores current issues in child bilingual development

More than 100 delegates attended the Current Issues in Child Bilingual Development Workshop on 26-27 July at the Australian Hearing Hub. The international event brought together people from a range of disciplines and backgrounds including linguists, psychologists, anthropologists, speech pathologists, educators and parents of bilingual children.

Guests heard about current research on the factors that enhance or impede bilingual language development, and the implications for theories of language acquisition, education and clinical practice.


Emerging Marketers Mentoring Program launched

Thursday 19 July marked the launch of an exciting initiative, the ‘Emerging Marketers Mentoring Program’, hosted by the Department of Marketing in partnership with Australian Marketing Institute.

A nexus between industry and university, the program provides aspiring marketers an opportunity to meet and talk with industry professionals and get valuable insights into the industry and its future. The program will involve 23 pairs of mentors and mentees and will run for five months.

The launch event was attended by accomplished marketing professionals, academics from the Department of Marketing and passionate mentees. Caroline Raj, Head of Marketing at IBM, gave the keynote speech.
