Record number of staff get flu shot

The University has seen a huge response to its flu shot campaign, with 1647 staff members taking up the offer.

With the 2017 flu season the worst for a number of years, MQ Health GP Luke Morphett believes this may have motivated more people to get the flu shot.

“This year we got the word out early and have worked hard to immunise people at the best possible time,” says Luke.

“Having the flu shot has benefits for the individual, but also the general population as a whole – it reduces your risk of catching the flu, and therefore reduces the risk of the infection spreading to other people.”

HR Director Nicole Gower explains staff wellbeing has been a focus area for HR in recent years, leading them to introduce free flu shots for staff last year, in partnership with MQ Health.

“The uptake amongst staff this year has been incredible – with 1647 staff having their flu shot in our health clinic, a 26.8% increase on last year,” Nicole says.

“I would encourage all staff to think about their health and wellbeing and to make the most of all the facilities and programs we have on campus. We also have lunch and learn sessions coming up on 25 July on Sleep and Stress Management, and our Wellbeing Week is in October.”

If you haven’t had the flu shot yet, it’s not too late. Make an appointment with MQ Health General Practice or see your regular GP.
