Train station upgrade announcement

The Minister for Transport, The Hon Andrew Constance MP, has announced that Macquarie University train station will be closed from 30 September 2018 for around seven months to enable conversion to the new Sydney Metro Northwest.

Sydney Metro Northwest will enable train travel for the population of Sydney’s northwest corridor from Rouse Hill to Chatswood and, most importantly, will stop at Macquarie University station. This will mean a better-connected train service to the University, with trains every four minutes during peak times.

During this time, the University will be supported by the new Station Link public transport network. Station Link will provide high frequency, turn-up-and-go services to stations between Epping and Chatswood across seven new routes. The services will be run using more than 120 new, fully accessible, air conditioned buses.

During the busiest parts of the day there will be a service at least every six minutes, with 110 services per hour. Station Link will include a dedicated high frequency service to Macquarie University campus from Epping Station. In addition, Transport for NSW will increase the capacity on existing bus routes supporting the University.

A Station Upgrade Project Team has been established to support students, staff and visitors during the shutdown. A series of initiatives is being developed by the team to help minimise this disruption.

Should you have concerns about the temporary closure of the Epping to Chatswood train line and Macquarie University station at this time, please email the project team at transport@mq.edu.au, or you can visit the Transport for NSW project website.

Arrangements can be made through your manager for the Station Upgrade Project Team to brief you and your colleagues.

  1. I booked Robert Menzies College & Dunmore Lang College next to Macquarie Uni Station to host Oxford Study Courses (Australia) intensive exam revsion courses for the upcoming July vacation, thinking handy access to the train was an advantage. (We have been hosted at New College, UNSW, Kensington for the past 5 years and experienced considerable inconvenience with the light rail works there).

Your published timetable suggested the work would be completed by our start date of 8th July. Was I being overly optimistic or will Macquarie Station be reopened by July 8th?

    1. Hi Seila,

The Government estimates that the works will take around seven months to complete so the station should reopen around May.

      Thanks,
      This Week team

    1. Hi Patty, thanks for your enquiry. The Station Link train replacement buses will collect and drop off at train stations between Chatswood and Epping so North Ryde is included. Go online to the Station Link website and see the map: http://www.mysydney.nsw.gov.au/node/3856.

  2. Are there any plans to look at the roads leading in to the Uni and the traffic flow within the University? It is already a bottleneck at peak times and with all the additional buses now I can see it has the potential to get worse.

    1. Hi Laura, Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services are reviewing all roads and signals in the area to optimise the flow of traffic during this time, including traffic into and out of the campus. During the shutdown, the Transport Management Centre will be actively monitoring the flow of traffic and will make additional changes where required.

  3. Is there any information yet about how regularly trains will travel to Epping from Central via Strathfield during the closedown? Currently these trains are only every 15 minutes in peak time

    1. Hi Niall, As a result of the upgrade, adjustments will be required to the rail network to allow for the T1 Northern and T1 North Shore Lines to operate separately. Existing services that run between Hornsby and the City via the ECRL and North Shore Line, stopping at all stations, will be replaced by limited stops services running via Strathfield on the T1 Northern Line. These services will start or terminate at Central during peak times.

At all other times of the day, trains will directly connect to Wynyard, Town Hall and North Shore stations via Strathfield and Central. There will be some service adjustments on the T1 North Shore Line to respond to the removal of trains that currently use the ECRL. Additional services will operate between the City and stations North of Chatswood; with service frequency designed to meet forecast demand.
