Universität Hamburg and Macquarie Law School partnership

Last year, Professor Martina Möllering, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, including Macquarie Law School, was a guest at the Faculty of Law at the Universität Hamburg. The occasion was the signing of two joint PhD contracts. The students, Christina Simmig and Manuela Niehaus, are the first participants in the field of law joint PhD program between the Universität Hamburg and Macquarie University.

The two doctoral students each receive a two-year tuition scholarship from Macquarie University to cover the joint period of enrolment, a one-year stipend scholarship to assist with living costs in Sydney during 2018 and 2019, and a return airfare between the partner institutions. Professor Markus Kotzur from the Universität Hamburg and Dr Kirsten Davies of Macquarie Law School will supervise the student’s candidature.

Also, as part of the partnership, a newly-designed program has been created – International Law Plus (IL+) – which seeks to bring German and Australian law students together to work on specific issues of international law.

The students will attend law courses together – in Sydney as well as in Hamburg – and will undertake joint research (online) supervised by academics from both law schools.

MGSM’s Iron Chef

MGSM Executive Hotel and Conference Centre’s Sous Chef, Dhruba Bhatta, has won an exciting ‘Iron Chef’-style cook-off to clinch the International Association of Conference Centre’s (IACC) Copper Skillet Australian Chef of the Year title in Auckland. He will now travel to the United States to represent the region at the international competition next month.

The cook off was held at this year’s 2018 Critics Choice for best restaurant in New Zealand – Inti Restaurant – with the chefs required to create a single dish from a list of pantry items, with a few secret ingredients thrown in at the last minute to add spice. All in just half an hour.

Dhruba created a dish by the fusion of items and flavours available from the pantry list and five surprise fresh items. His dish included pan fried salmon and duck breast stuffed with fresh chili, coriander and fennel placed on a bed of sliced potatoes served with asparagus and flavoured with tomato basil salsa. Judging criteria included originality of the creation, technique, presentation, textures, balance of flavour combinations as well as hygiene standards of the work station.

“I feel very proud to have the opportunity to represent Australia internationally and to represent the staff at MGSM who have supported and inspired me to strive for excellence,” said Dhruba.
