Give the gift of reading to children today

Reading Clinic

As a staff member, have you ever wondered if there are ways in which you can give back to our community? Did you know there are many worthy educational programs and innovative research projects developed here at Macquarie University?

You can start the philanthropic journey of ‘paying it forward’ by forgoing as little as just one weekly coffee, beer or wine, to save up a small donation for a cause that piques your interest.

For example, right now, there are six children on the Reading Clinic Scholarship waiting list, just hoping to get on the program.

According to Professor Genevieve McArthur, head of the Department of Cognitive Science and director of the Macquarie University Reading Clinic, moving these children in need from a waitlist to starting their treatment is profound.

Take for example, William (pictured above), who has been coming to the Reading Clinic for nearly two years and whose mum Carolyn has noticed a huge change.

“He went from not reading at all, not willing to even try, to giving it a go and actually reading,” she says.

“He doesn’t feel as excluded at school and can join in more in class. It’s given him hope that he can achieve something.”

William went from being “lonely” and “mishroboll” to “happy” and “confident” with the Reading Clinic’s help, says Genevieve.

“I can’t tell you what a relief it has been to watch him develop in his learning. He is so much happier, and it has given him a sense of optimism.”

If you would like to see kids who are still on the waitlist learn to read, please donate here.
